Work environment

📢 The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) is part of the Science sector of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

CHS vision is to be a world leader and leader in hydrography, a proactive and reliable supplier of geospatial hydrographic services, and a strong partner in the development and application of ocean technology. The CHS office in Ottawa has more than fifty employees and works in close collaboration with the 5 other CHS offices: St. John’s (NL), Dartmouth (NS), Mont-Joli (QC), Burlington (ON) and Sidney (BC) as well as with various government departments.

Intent of the process

📢 The immediate intent is to staff up to 3 positions for a duration of 2.5 years in Ottawa (National Capital Region).

However, the process could be used to staff similar positions with various language requirements, tenures and security requirements within Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

💼EDUCATION
▪ Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in remote sensing, geomatics, Geographic Information System (GIS), geography, engineering, earth sciences, physics, geology or some other science relevant to the position .

Degree equivalency

📋EXPERIENCE
▪ Experience in acquiring , processing and analyzing remote sensing and geomatics data.
▪ Experience in remote sensing image analysis software system
▪ Experience in using Geographic Information System (GIS) software (such as ESRI/ArcGIS, CARIS)

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

💼EDUCATION:
▪ Graduation with an advanced degree (Masters, Doctorate) from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

📋EXPERIENCE:
▪ Experience in extracting satellite derived bathymetry or mapping coastal areas with earth observation data.
▪ Experience with one or more advanced SAR technologies such as interferometry, polarimetry, polarimetric-interferometry
▪ Experience with scripting.
▪ Experience in the usage of deep machine learning to extract information from satellite remote sensing data

❗ORGANIZATIONAL NEED
Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard are committed to establishing and maintaining a workforce representative of the population it serves. ▪ Knowledge satellite image processing software and geographical information systems (GIS), like ESRI suite and PCI Geomatica (CATALYST).
▪ Knowledge of current practices and techniques in remote sensing

Candidates invited to an interview will be required to bring proof of their education credentials, in the form of a diploma or official transcript (original documents only).

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
