Fire Crew Members (GT-02) and Fire Crew Leaders (GT-03) are a fundamental part of our Fire Management Team. These individuals help carry out the agency’s fire management programs through fuel management, prescribed fires, and wildfire suppression services.
Additionally, you’ll assist in various projects as part of the Resource Conservation team related to natural and cultural resource management, vegetation management, incident response and management, including compliance.
You’ll work alongside and support, as needed other areas within the Northern Prairies Field Unit and respond to incidents across the country.
Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.
The results of this process will be used to establish a pool of qualified applicants which can be drawn from to fill GT-02 and GT-03 positions. The pool may be used in the future to fill permanent or temporary vacancies that may arise at the GT-02 Fire Crew Member, or GT-03 Fire Crew Leader group and level, in the Northern Prairies Field Unit, in various locations, with full or part-time hours for various tenures, such as: Acting Assignment, Indeterminate, Term, Assignment at level, depending on status of the selected candidate.

EDUCATION:
Needed for both GT-02/GT-03:
A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training, experience or traditional knowledge related to the position.
EXPERIENCE:
Needed for both GT-02/GT-03:
• Experience working in outdoor or remote environments;
• Experience working in a resource, environmental, or fire management field;
• Experience working in a team environment.
Additional experience required for GT-03:
• Experience in fire management operations related to fuel management, prescribed fire and/or fire suppression;
• Experience working on the fireline;
• Experience in using and maintaining fire equipment;
• Experience in supervising staff.
Preference may be given to candidates with experience in fire suppression, including mop-up and patrol on multiple fires of various sizes and complexities; experience in fireline construction using hand tools, power tools and water delivery systems and experience with aircraft use (both fixed and rotary-wing) in fire management operations.

The following qualifications may be applied and/or assessed because they are beneficial in carrying out the duties of the position. They may be used in screening, assessment or determining right fit for this selection process, so please describe how you meet any of the following criteria:
Asset Occupational Certification
• Basic Wildland Fire Management Course, Parks Canada Agency (PCA) or equivalent Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) certification (S-100/S-131).
• Wildlife Danger Tree Assessor certification – Wildland Fire Safety module
• Intermediate Fire Behaviour Course PCA or equivalent Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) certification (S-290).
• Introductory Incident Command System ICS-100.
• Valid chainsaw certification through an accredited training provider.
Asset Experience
• Previous fireline or firefighting related experience, including any volunteer work;
• Recent (within the last 3 years) experience supervising fire crew member(s), while on the fireline, prescribed fire(s) and/or fuel management project(s).
Security Screening: Obtain and maintain Reliability Status Clearance.
Obtain and maintain valid class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.
40-hour Wilderness First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) and CPR certificate
Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks, including:
• Occupational Health Assessment for firefighters;
• Meet and maintain certified status for the Canadian Physical Performance Exchange
Standard for Type 1 Wildland Fire Fighters (WFX-FIT) in accordance with Canadian
Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) Requirements;
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
• Willingness to work and/or travel in adverse environmental conditions, varied terrain, isolated locations and by various means of transportation, including fixed and rotary wing;
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required.
• Willingness to complete various training courses and attain certifications;
• Willingness to participate in Incident Command System positions as required and assigned;
• Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required;
• Able and willing to annually certify for helicopter hover exit
• Able and willing to obtain and maintain chainsaw certification.
