Duties

STREAM 1 - VEGETATION:
Reporting to the Vegetation Specialist, your role will be to implement and monitor terrestrial restoration projects within the Banff Field Unit (non native vegetation management, reclamation/restoration, and five-needle pine recovery). As part of the Fire/Vegetation team, you will coordinate a wide range of tasks and projects that help maintain and improve ecological integrity. Activities may include:

a) Delivering the Integrated Pest Management Plan for Non-Native Vegetation, including herbicide applications in front and backcountry settings.
b) Supporting restoration and reclamation activities such as seed collecting, planting, seeding, and organizing contractors.
c) Organizing and delivering front and back country trips targeted at achieving management targets and monitoring objectives.

e) Working with, collecting, and processing spatial data
f) Performing data analysis and report writing

The ideal candidate enjoys being outside and has experience in supervising professionals. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with excellent logistics and organization skills to ensure their team is efficient, effective, and engaged.

STREAM 2 – FIRE:
Delivers technical and analytical services in applied science, monitoring, active management, and emergency response related to fire management. Duties include maintaining database for fire weather and fire behaviour and maintenance of specialized equipment. Development of prescribed fire, fuel management plans and environmental assessments in support of fire management in the field unit. Fills field unit fire duty officer role on a rotating basis.

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

EDUCATION (BOTH STREAMS VEGETATION AND FIRE):

ED1: Minimum completion of two years of a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g., biology, ecology, geology, forestry) or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience in a field related to the position.

NOTE: Proof of education will be required at time of interview.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE (BOTH STREAMS VEGETATION AND FIRE):

EX1: Experience in travelling or working in the field under various climatic conditions.

EX2: Experience participating in field research or active management projects.

EX3: Experience using a variety of data/sample collection equipment and means of transportation.

EX4: Experience contributing to the preparation of technical/scientific reports and manuscripts drafts, presentations, web site information, public presentation or displays.

EXPERIENCE (STREAM 2 – FIRE)

EX5: Experience in fire management including prescribed fires and emergency wildfire operations.

K1: Knowledge of specialized technical and scientific equipment operation and maintenance requirements.

K2: Knowledge of terrestrial environment, vegetation, and wildlife characteristics, as well as weather conditions specific to the mountain national parks.

KNOWLEDGE (STREAM 2 – FIRE):

K3: Knowledge of fire management activities including fire suppression, prescribed fire and fuel management projects.

K4: Knowledge of and application of the Incident Command System (ICS).

K5: Knowledge of wildland fire behavior concepts and prediction, particularly as they relate to fire line safety.

A4: Ability to assist in the preparation and presentation of scientific reports and to communicate with a variety of audiences using variety of techniques.

A5: Ability to use a variety of computer applications in the development and maintenance of databases.

ABILITIES (STREAM 2 – FIRE)

A6: Ability to determine operational requirements, activities and mechanisms for fuel management, prescribed fires and emergency wildfire response.

AEX1: Experience in vegetation identification (native and non-native)
AEX 2: Experience in work planning and supervising crews

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS (BOTH STREAMS VEGETATION AND FIRE):

• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required.
• Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g., all terrain vehicles) and marine (motorised and non-motorized vessels) as required.

Conditions of employment

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (BOTH STREAMS VEGETATION AND FIRE):

• Security Screening: Obtain and maintain Reliability Status including fingerprints.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid class 5 driver's license (Class L, N or other graduated licenses will not be accepted).
• Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks.
• Possession and maintenance of St. John’s Ambulance Standard First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) and CPR Certificate.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (STREAM 2 – FIRE):

• Successful completion of Moderate Fitness Test as per the Parks Canada Standard Operating Procedure, "Fire Management Workplace Fitness Capacity Test”.
