Duties

Vegetation Management (VM) position description:
Supports the vegetation management program through assisting in Integrated Pest Management, disturbed site reclamation/restoration, and vegetation monitoring. Conducts front and backcountry surveys and control for non-native vegetation while collecting geospatial data for monitoring purposes. The majority of the work will include mechanical and chemical control of non-native vegetation (using hand tools, brush saw, etc.), restoration activities (soil amendments, seeding, planting, staking, translocations) and monitoring (transects, rangeland health monitoring). Position is field based with the expectation of working in a team environment and with the majority of time spent outdoors. Students must be comfortable in remote backcountry settings for extended periods (up to 5 days).

Ecological Integrity Monitoring (EIM) position description:
Students will conduct field work to monitor forest and alpine songbird diversity, pika abundance, amphibian occupancy and wildlife occupancy (wildlife remote cameras). In addition, students will support EIM projects at the office with fieldwork preparation and planning, organizing and servicing field equipment, data entry and management, remote camera photo classification, and songbird/amphibian audio classification. Students must be physically fit; and able to safely travel, navigate and spend full days in the wilderness.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Intent of the process

The results may be used in the future to fill other temporary student vacancies that may arise in the Banff Field Unit, in various locations, with full or part-time hours for various tenures, depending on status of the selected candidate.

EDUCATION:

Successful completion of at least one year at a recognized post-secondary institution
in a program leading to a degree; in a field related to biological sciences, ecology,
geography, environmental sciences, or other field closely related to natural sciences.

Currently registered as a full-time student in a recognized institution.

Proof of education will be required at time of interview.

Degree equivalency

Possession and maintenance of valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate.

EXPERIENCE IN:
• Strong wilderness travel skills including experience hiking long distances with a heavy backpack, often in trail-less and steep mountainous terrain; in inclement weather conditions; and on day and overnight trips.
• Experience following scientific field data collection protocols and recording data accurately.
• Experience using scientific research computer applications such as spreadsheets and/or databases.

Asset Qualifications:
The following qualifications may be applied and/or assessed because they are beneficial in carrying out the duties of the position. They may be used in screening, assessment or determining right fit for this selection process, so please describe how you meet any of the following criteria.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE:
• Experience with ecological restoration and/or landscaping, including use of hand tools and small mechanized equipment for vegetation management.
• Experience with native and/or non-native plant identification
• Knowledge of Banff National Park’s landscape, weather and wildlife safety protocols
• Certifications including but not limited to: Wilderness First Aid – 40-hour min, Electro-fishing, PAL etc.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Possession and maintenance of a valid unrestricted class 5 driver's license (Class L, N or other graduated licenses will not be accepted);
• Willing and able to wear a Parks Canada uniform and personal safety equipment;
• Willing and able to work varied hours, shift, weekends, evenings, overtime and holidays;
• Willing and able to work outdoors and be exposed to various weather conditions;
• Willing and able to travel between various work sites and in inclement weather conditions.
