Are you someone who loves to interact with people and facilitate meaningful experiences? Do you have an interest in outdoor activities? Do you like working as part of a close-knit team? If so, the Learn-to Camp summer student position may be an excellent fit for you.

Parks Canada’s Learn-to Camp Team is a group focused on bringing knowledge and passion about camping and the outdoors to new audiences across the Greater Toronto Area. Our team works with a diverse audience across the region, helping to connect people of all backgrounds to Canada's natural, cultural, and agricultural gems.

If you would like to be an advocate for the outdoors, please take the time to apply. Some of the expected duties of this position include:

• Developing and/or delivering inspiring in-person programs that better connect a diverse audience with the natural, cultural and agricultural messaging of Rouge National Urban Park and Learn-to Camp programming;
• Representing Parks Canada at various community events, libraries, parks, festivals and other locations throughout the Greater Toronto Area;
• Engaging with the public through programming that showcases outdoor activity options available to our audience, both within and outside of Rouge National Urban Park;
• Assist with the planning and regular evaluation of events;
• Liaise with community collaborator organizations to ensure promptness and professionalism;
• Work collaboratively with a variety of Parks Canada team members.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and preservation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

A rich assembly of natural, cultural and agricultural landscapes, Rouge National Urban Park is home to amazing biodiversity, some of the last remaining working farms in the Greater Toronto Area, Carolinian ecosystems, Toronto’s only campground, amazing hiking opportunities, and human history dating back over 10,000 years.

Rouge National Urban Park is one of the largest and best protected urban parks of its kind in the world, spanning 79.1 square kilometres in the heart of Canada's largest and most diverse metropolitan area, overlapping the cities of Toronto, Markham and Pickering and the townships of Uxbridge and Whitchurch-Stouffville.

Intent of the process

Anticipatory

The intent of this process is to anticipate the need to fill an undetermined number of full-time (37.5 hours/week) positions from early May to August 2024.

This role requires 100% of time on duty allocated in office, in park or at partner events.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

• Experience working with the public.

• Experience working within a team environment.

• Experience creating and/or delivering fun and engaging material to a wide variety of audiences.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

• Experience leading or participating in recreational camping (frontcountry or car camping is sufficient) and/or other outdoor experiences, including outdoor education.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform;
• Willingness to work outdoors and be exposed to variable weather conditions and stand for long periods of time;
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, evenings, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays;
• Willingness to set-up, take-down and move equipment (including large and heavy tables and tents);
• Possess at a minimum a valid G2 driver’s license (by the time of hiring);
• Possess a valid First Aid and CPR-C certification (by the time of hiring).
