This position will work as a part of Parks Canada’s Terrestrial Archaeology team to support Parks Canada’s involvement in Impact Assessment Act (IAA) related projects and project reviews within and surrounding Coastal British Columbia. It will involve providing professional support and input into the Government of Canada’s review and assessment of these projects, and participating in Parks Canada’s role as subject matter specialists for the Government of Canada on archaeology. A key component of this position will be to lead the development and implementation of a multi-year (2024-2028), collaborative, impact assessment project, focused on examining and assessing coastal erosion and archaeological site impacts related to projects being reviewed under the Impact Assessment Act (IAA). Tasks will involve liaising, collaborating, and engaging with relevant Parks Canada protected places and Field Units, as well as relevant Indigenous groups and other subject matter specialists. There will be the need to develop and implement fieldwork, collect and assess information and data, report on studies and findings, and disseminate information and results.

EDUCATION:
• Graduate degree in Archaeology or Anthropology with a specialization in archaeology.
EXPERIENCE:
• Recent* and substantial** experience with all aspects*** of complex**** archaeological field projects in the Northwest Coast cultural area of British Columbia, including the development, management, and leading of these projects.
*Recent experience is defined as within the last five years.
**Substantial is defined as being the main focus of one’s duties normally acquired over at least 5 years.
***All aspects are defined as: surveying/inventory, excavations, assessment of archaeological potential, assessment of archaeological impacts, developing mitigation measures, monitoring and report writing.
****Complex archaeological field projects are defined as multi-year and/or multi-site projects.

KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of current archaeological theories, methods and techniques as they apply to the Northwest Coast cultural area of British Columbia;
• Knowledge of the material culture associated with archaeological sites in and/or surrounding the Northwest Coast cultural area of British Columbia;
• Knowledge of best practices and protocols pertaining to archaeology and Indigenous communities in the Coast Salish and Nuu-Chah-Nulth cultural regions of British Columbia.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Willingness to carryout archaeological fieldwork in remote and/or physically demanding areas in varied weather conditions and by various means of transportation (including marine vessels);
• Willingness to wear the Parks Canada Uniform, as required;
• Willingness to work irregular hours and additional hours, as required.
