Pacific Rim National Park Reserve (PRNPR) is seeking Visitor Safety Technicians (GT04). This dynamic position provides leadership and coordination to prevent and respond to incidents across PRNPR, including within the West Coast Trail, Broken Group Islands, or Long Beach Unit.
The work of a Visitor Safety Technicians is varied, and involves time spent in the backcountry, and at a desk. They are called upon to participate in, and/or lead technical visitor safety incident responses and non-technical cross-functional incident response activities. The individual provides technical observation and reporting for weather, wave and storm monitoring programs. In addition, they are asked to provide technical visitor safety advice and training to other park staff. They participate in the development of program standards and/or techniques and to actively support the Visitor Safety Planning process. They participate in technical responses to significant occurrences in other field units and may be required to support other resource conversation functions such as the human wildlife conflict program.
This job involves outdoor, physically demanding work. You will be expected to perform strenuous physical activity effectively and safely, to work and travel in varied terrain and weather conditions and provide and wear sturdy footwear suitable for hiking and working in a coastal environment. You must be willing and able to spend up to ten days’ duration in a remote work location, work weekends, holidays and overtime including stand-by and extra-duty if required.

EDUCATION:

• Valid Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification (minimum 80 hour course) or equivalent
• Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP)

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment
• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required
• Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required
• Willingness to obtain other certification as required and identified by the field unit
• Willing and able to stand/walk/hike for prolonged periods while carrying heavy loads (eg. hiking in thick forest or coastal terrain for 3-4 hours while carrying response equipment)
• May be exposed to potential injury when performing activities
