Duties

Parks Canada is looking for energetic individuals who enjoy working outdoors and with the public to fill lock operator positions. Your work will focus on: operating locks, bridges and dam controls as required to allow boats to pass through the locks and navigate the canals; maintaining the grounds and lock station facilities, structures, equipment and machinery; providing services to clients and visitors, responding to inquiries and providing information about Parks Canada and its canal/waterway facilities, structures, equipment and machinery.

The Quebec Waterways unit manages five historic canals stretching from Montreal to the St. Lawrence, Richelieu and Outaouais rivers. These canals are situated in three important tourism regions in the province and also have numerous collaborations with important stakeholders and partners.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

→Must have a valid driver's license - Class 5
→Availability to work irregular hours (4-12 hours per day) and variable weeks
→Availability to work evenings, weekends and holidays
→Must be available for the duration of the reporting period
→Uniform and personal protective equipment must be worn
→Obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card within one month of hire at the employee's expense
→Work in an environment that is sometimes noisy and busy due to visitors, boaters and users, and in sometimes difficult weather conditions
→Willingness and ability to perform demanding and sustained physical work
