Duties

As the Sustainable Management Officer, some of your duties may include:

↪ Providing scientific/technical support and advice in the development of environmental programs, processes, and activities;
↪ Leading the development of strategies and plans to ensure DND/CAF activities are conducted in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and policies;
↪ Leading and participating in multi-stakeholder working groups and multi-disciplinary project teams/committees regarding the implementation of an environmental program and related issues;
↪ Reviewing/writing policy and position papers, briefing material, and reports on Branch, departmental, Other Government Departments (OGD) and federal agencies on associated environmental policies, technical studies and activities.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill one (1) English essential indeterminate (permanent) position in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As a result of this process, a pool of candidates may be established and used to staff the same or similar positions.

The official location of the position (designated worksite) to be staffed is CFB Halifax.

EDUCATION
ED1. Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, engineering, chemistry, biology, geography, oceanography, environmental science or some other science relevant to the position.

Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
EX1. Significant* experience developing and communicating environmental policies, directives, or procedures.
EX2. Significant* experience working in a maritime environment or significant* experience working in a naval operational role.
EX3. Experience implementing an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System or a CSA Z1000/ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
EX4. Experience applying environmental requirements within an industrial or maritime environment.
EX5. Experience leading diverse teams to achieve results in a complex work environment.

*Significant refers to the depth and breadth of experience associated with the performance of a broad range of related activities that were the candidate’s primary work responsibilities. It will be assessed on the basis of the scope, complexity and the diversity of the work performed.

AED1. Graduation with a master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in an area of study relevant to the position.

AEX2. Experience in environmental program management or environmental project management with varying degrees of complexity and magnitude
AEX3. Experience with safety program management or safety project management with varying degrees of complexity and magnitude.
AEX4. Experience developing and communicating safety policies, directives, or procedures.
AEX5. Experience with contract management, including development and preparation.
AEX6. Experience with conducting verifications, investigations, inspections, and writing related reports.
AEX7. Experience in financial and budget management, including development of a budget or business plan.

**Senior Management is defined as staff at the executive level.

• Occasionally, required to work in extreme weather conditions, to wear personal protective equipment and be potentially exposed to occupational health and safety hazards when participating in investigations, inspections, and verifications and responding to emergency situations.
• Availability to travel, and occasionally work irregular hours/overtime if required.
• Meet and maintain a Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent.
