This is a student position involving 2–3 days per week (15–22.5 hours weekly) for a 6-month period during the Fall/Winter 2026 term, with the possibility of extension.
Salary
$17.75 to $38.38 per hour
- The student should be paid the standard hourly rate based on their year and level of study (paid bi-weekly)

About the position
Duties
The Zero Emission Technology group is in need of a graduate research assistant in order to assist on the execution of projects related to the development and implementation of advanced carbon capture and utilization processes as well as new Critical Minerals (CMs) projects. Key project activities include: "providing engineering support for the development of test rigs", "running experiments to collect and analyze data", "perform engineering calculations and simulations", and "prepare reports and presentations".

This position is located at the Bells Corners Complex, situated within Ottawa’s Greenbelt, yet close to restaurants and shopping within the area of Bells Corners. Situated between Nepean and Kanata, we are close to the Bayshore bus station as well as the Eagleson/Terry Fox Park and Ride with bus access to the Complex. This location also features trails and walking paths as well as workplace wellness programs including running, fitness and mental health initiatives to boost employee morale and work/life balance.

Education:
• Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a Master’s or PhD program at a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in engineering, science, chemistry, or another relevant discipline.

• Experience in plasma or microwave systems and operations.
• Experience working in a laboratory environment.

Asset Education
• Graduate degree in Chemical Engineering or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Asset Experience:
• Experience in data analysis and material characterization (SEM, XRD, Raman).
• Experience in gas handling and control systems
• Experience using engineering simulation software packages such as Aspen, Comsol, Matlab, etc.
Asset Knowledge:
• Knowledge on carbon formation mechanisms and graphitization processes.
• Knowledge of fundamentals of reaction engineering and plasma physics.
