About the position
DutiesYou will support the conservation of heritage places, including buildings, components, finishes, and related site features.
Responsibilities include:
1. Assisting with fieldwork and site-based conservation activities, including basic observations, measurements, and photographic documentation;
2. Contributing to the preparation and organization of conservation documentation, such as compiling field notes, organizing photos, and drafting basic report elements;
3. Supporting research on conservation techniques, materials, historic finishes, and site management practices by gathering background information and summarizing findings;
4. Helping coordinate logistics for site visits, including preparing equipment, organizing travel materials, and supporting adherence to safety procedures;
5. Participating in project meetings by taking notes, tracking follow-up items, and assisting with communication among project partners;
6. Assisting with preventive conservation and monitoring activities, including collecting basic environmental or site condition data under supervision;
7. Engaging in structured learning and training as part of the Emerging Professional Program, including mentorship, technical workshops, and familiarization with relevant standards and CCI/HPC procedures.
Work environmentWorking at the Canadian Conservation Institute means:
• Collaborating with a team of conservation professionals in conservation treatment, preventive conservation and conservation science.
• Collaborating with specialists in publications, communications and training.
• Working with clients primarily with heritage professionals and institutions, such as museums, libraries, archives, and cultural centres in Canada.
• Maintaining close connections with organizations and colleagues from around the world to collaborate on research projects or to share their knowledge at professional conferences.

Education (essential qualification):
Diploma from a post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the position, obtained within the last five (5) years or an acceptable combination of education, experience, and training.
Acceptable combination means a high school diploma in combination with a few years of relevant work experience and professional development courses related to the job’s duties.
Exemples of fields relevant to the position are heritage conservation, conservation, architecture, engineering, building science or museum studies or collections management.

Experiences (essential qualifications):
1. Experience in conservation or heritage-related projects involving heritage buildings and sites, architectural components, or decorative treatments (including furnishings, objects and finishes.)
2. Experience contributing to the assessment or documentation of heritage places, such as recording building conditions, materials, finishes, or conservation needs, to support conservation or site management activities.
The experience may have been acquired through professional work, academic studies and/or volunteer or extracurricular activities.

Asset Qualifications :
Education:
Master or PhD degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the position
Experiences:
1. Experience assisting with or contributing to technical documentation supporting contract documents, specifications, or project planning information.
2. Experience assisting with or contributing to sampling, testing, or analysis activities related to building materials, architectural components, or heritage site conditions.
3. Experience assisting with or contributing to work on capital projects or activities within active construction sites.
4. Experience assisting with or contributing to the use of a quantitative risk analysis method for cultural heritage (e.g., ABC Method, CPRAM).
5. Experience assisting with or contributing to the development or delivery of training, workshops, or didactic materials.
6. Experience in working with or within Indigenous communities or organizations.
