About the position
DutiesPerforms field, greenhouse, growth chamber and forage/hay operations such as preparing soil, seeding, planting, propagating, fertilizing, spraying, maintaining and harvesting a variety of plant material.
Recognizes abnormalities and determines appropriate course of action within the parameters of the program.
Operates a variety of crop/field equipment.
Performs care and maintenance of such things as experimental plots, fences and fields.
Prepares materials such as soil, seed and plants for laboratory analysis, experimentation (for example, cleaning, weighing) and/or haying.
Observes, inspects, measures and collects data covering a wide range of facts/attributes including plant disease, growth, insects, etc., from seeding to harvest or, provides reports or verbal updates.
Selects, grades; collects and/or labels samples, and/or records data as directed.
Operates, cleans, adjusts and generally makes minor repairs to a variety of tools and equipment.
In accordance with research protocols/instructions, participates in setting up trials.
Keeps records and field notes for agronomic activities and inputs to database, provides reports, charts, verbal updates or keeps basic records of activities, inventories and supplies.

A pool of qualified or partially qualified candidates may be established and used to fill similar positions on a temporary or permanent basis.

Security : Reliability
Possession of a valid, class 5 Saskatchewan driver’s license, or other provincial/territorial equivalency.
Ability and willingness to work overtime, including evenings and weekends.
Ability and willingness to work under variable weather conditions.
Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 25kg).
Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise).
Ability and willingness to control allergies, through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and this must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
Ability and willingness to work in a laboratory, greenhouse and field environments.
Ability and willingness to work with chemicals and pesticides.
Operational Requirements

Ability and willingness to obtain a Class 1 Saskatchewan driver’s license.
Ability and willingness to obtain a Pesticide Applicator’s License.

Education:
A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Experience:
Experience in calibration, operation and maintenance of agricultural/farm equipment, such as tractors, seeders, combines, and sprayers.
Experience in handling and applying agricultural chemical products, such as fertilizers and pesticides.
Experience in working with various crops, such as cereals, oilseeds and pulses.
Applied / assessed at a later date
Knowledge:
Knowledge of soil fertility and nitrogen management.
Knowledge of crop production.
Knowledge of weeds, insects and plant diseases.
