About the position
Work environmentThe position is located at 960 Carling Avenue, where Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada maintains 1,005 acres of property and 70 research buildings, with operations and maintenance services provided by in-house building systems technicians.
These facilities make up the national historic site of the Central Experimental Farm (CEF), a fully operational farm in the middle of the city. This property includes the Dominion Arboretum, the Ornamental Gardens, the Ottawa Research and Development Centre, and the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum.
The CEF welcomes millions of tourists each year, as well as many local students who visit to take part in educational activities.
As an active research center, the CEF also attracts scientists and international students who come to study or collaborate on projects.
Intent of the process
The immediate need is to staff two (2) positions for a 12-month term, with the possibility of extension:
Lead hand for Grounds & Sites/Services
Lead hand for Woody Plants and Ornamental Gardens
A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various employment tenures as well as various language requirements.

Possession of a valid, class (G) (ON) driver’s license, or other provincial/territorial equivalency.
Operational Requirements
Able and willing to work in variable weather conditions (such as extreme heat, cold, rain, winds, and snow).
Willing and able to work overtime, evenings, and weekends occasionally.
Willing and able to lift up to 25 Kg (50 lbs).
Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.

Education:
A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives (see Note 1).

Experience:
Experience working within a horticultural, commercial landscaping and/or agricultural environment.
Experience in the operation and maintenance of horticultural and/or farm related equipment.
Experience in commercial snow removal operations on a large site.
Experience in supervisory responsibilities.
Experience using MS Office (such as Outlook, Word and Excel).
Applied / assessed at a later date
Knowledges :
Knowledge of care and maintenance in horticulture.
Knowledge of best practices and maintenance of roadways and pathways.
Knowledge of best practices and maintenance in commercial snow removal operations on a large site.
Knowledge of best practices and maintenance in tools, equipment and vehicles.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the work to be performed.

- Certification in the operation of a chainsaw.
- Certification in the operation of heavy commercial equipment for the purposes of grounds maintenance.
Possession of a valid, class (D) with Z-air endorsement) (ON) driver’s license, or other provincial/territorial equivalency.
Experience in turf and lawn care and repair and maintenance of roadways, pathways.
Experience in identifying abnormalities in lawn, plants, trees, pests, disease and/or determining appropriate courses of action.
