About the position
Duties
• Performs comprehensive health assessments, diagnoses health/illness conditions, and treats, monitors, manages and evaluates acute and chronic illnesses.
• Orders and interprets screening and diagnostic tests, performs medical procedures, prescribes medications and makes referrals to other specialist medical providers or programs.
• Supports, educates, coaches and counsels clients regarding diagnosis, prognosis and condition self management.
• Develops, utilizes and evaluates processes within the practice setting to ensure that clients receive coordinated health services; collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary health services team to provide and promote inter-professional client centered evidence-based care at the individual, organization and system level and advocates on the client's behalf.
• Assesses, identifies and critically analyzes information from a variety of sources to determine trends and patterns that have health implications; guides, initiates and provides leadership in the development and implementation of standards, practice guidelines, quality assurance and education and research initiatives.
• Initiates or participates in the design of services/interventions for health promotion, health protection and the prevention of injury, illness, disease and complications.
• Work collaboratively with other health service providers such as physicians, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, dieticians, administrative assistants as well as staff outside of health services such as Correctional Officers for effective delivery of services.
Work environment
Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is the federal government agency responsible for administering court imposed sentences of a term of two years or more. CSC manages various security level institutions and supervises offenders under conditional release in the community. CSC's mandate is to contribute to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and human control.
Intent of the process
The intent of this advertisement is to create a pool of qualified candidates for current and future Nurse Practitioner needs (both permanent and temporary) at the four locations noted on this job advertisement for the Ontario Region, Correctional Service of Canada. Immediate needs are in Kingston, ON and Gravenhurst, ON.

• Medical Clearance through Health Canada or alternatives designated by Health Canada.
• Possess a Nurse Practitioner registration with a provincial Nursing regulatory agency in the Canadian province or territory of practice with no conditions or restrictions.
• Valid CPR/AED level Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Valid CPR/AED for Health Care Providers (HCP) is also acceptable.

EDUCATION
Master’s Degree in Nursing from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization as a Nurse Practitioner.

Possess a Registered Nurse Practitioner license in good standing from the provincial regulatory body in a Canadian province or territory*.
* In order to be appointed, candidates must be registered in the province or territory where the position is being staffed.

EXPERIENCE
• A minimum of five years’ combined experience as a Registered Nurse or as a Registered Nurse Practitioner.
• Experience working in a correctional environment.
• Experience in planning comprehensive discharge plans for individuals with complex medical problems.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities.
• Experience working in Emergency or Intensive care units.
• Experience working in a community based setting such as Public Health or Community Mental Health.
• Experience working in maternal or women’s health.
