About the position
Duties
- Supervise research to assess, improve, and develop scientific procedures and technologies used in the determination of mycotoxins.
- Supervise surveillance and monitoring of mycotoxins performed to support Canada’s reputation as a consistent and reliable source of high-quality grain.
- Supervise a team of technicians as well as the operations of an analytical laboratory containing a variety of state-of-the-art tools, including liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and high resolution mass spectrometry.

The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is a federal department responsible to ensure the integrity and marketability of grain for the domestic and international grain trade, from producer to global customer.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
• Work overtime as required.
• Work with and be exposed to hazardous chemicals and equipment.
• Wear appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment.
• Maintain standing and/or sitting positions for extended periods of time.
• Work in an environment where there is continual exposure to grain and flour dust (known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and must not impinge upon the work to be performed).
• Move and/or lift items (up to 20 kg.).
• Adhere to laboratory safety standards and procedures.
• Work in cold rooms for limited periods in order to retrieve samples.
You need (essential for the job)
Your application must clearly explain how you meet the following
EDUCATION:
• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in chemistry

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience managing staff, including assessing and developing staff performance.
• Experience developing and using laboratory quality assurance and quality control procedures.
• Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting mass spectrometric-based analytical instrumentation.

• Experience performing or supervising the analysis of heavy metals in complex matrices using microwave digestion and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
