About the position

Duties
- Undertakes formal and on-the-job training (OJT) within a formal developmental program to gain technical knowledge and experience required for progression to the next level.
- Maintains, installs, modifies and repairs a variety of electronic equipment and systems on ships and in land based facilities in support of the Coast Guard clients in accordance with the manufacturers' manuals and national standards, policies and guidelines.
- Provides technical support for computer networks on ships and client operational based networks as well as stand alone computers on land and ship.
Since it's an entry level developmental position, the work is directed and monitored by supervisors and/or fully qualified technicians.

Intent of the process
The intent of this process is to fill six (6) positions in the MELDEV program: three (3) in Quebec city, two (2) in Sorel and one (1) in Sept-Iles.
A pool of partially or essentially qualified candidates may be established through this process and may be used to staff identical or similar positions at the Department of National Defence across Canada.

▶ Agreement to being deployed anywhere in Canada during the first 7 years of employment;
▶ Willingness and capacity to work on ships either in port or at sea;
▶ Willingness and capacity to work overtime and weekends as required, sometimes on short notice, and in a 24/7 operational environment;
▶ Willingness and capacity to travel, sometimes on short notice and/or for extended periods, for general duties, for training purposes, to remote locations and/or to perform work on vessels at sea;
▶ Willingness and capacity to travel by various modes of transportation such as ship, boat, automobile, plane, helicopter, ATV, snowmobile, etc. to perform work at remote locations and/or to perform work on vessels at sea;
▶ A successful Health Canada pre-placement fitness-to-work assessment is required and should be maintain throughout employment within the EL group (Electronic);
▶ Must possess a Valid Driver’s Licence free of restrictions. Note: New, beginners, graduated or restricted drivers licenses are not acceptable;
▶ Not subject to vertigo (working on towers and ships’ masts);
▶ Not subject to claustrophobia(working in confined spaces).

Employee will occasionally be required to work overtime.

EDUCATION
Secondary school and the completion of an acceptable training program in electronics technology or the employer-approved alternative.
The employer-approved alternative is as follows:

Normally, an acceptable training program in electronics technology involves the completion of two to three years of post-secondary study in this subject.

EXPERIENCE
Experience in using a computer and computer software such as word processing software, database software, spreadsheet software and presentation software.

CO1: Knowledge of the theory of techniques used to maintain electronic equipment and systems in the fields of telecommunications, computer science and microprocessor-based systems;
CO2: Knowledge of digital and analog concepts of electronic devices and equipment;
CO3: Knowledge of basic test equipment for maintaining electronic equipment.
