Behchokǫ̀
Behchokǫ̀ is located approximately one hour from the capital of the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife via paved highway. With a population close to 2,500 people, the self-governed community of Behchokǫ̀, which means “Big Knife”, in the Tłı̨chǫ language, is one of the largest Indigenous communities in the Northwest Territories. The region has been the traditional hunting grounds of the Tłı̨chǫ for centuries. The first Hudson’s Bay Company post in the region was established in 1852 and was later moved where Behchokǫ̀ is today. With access to the highway system, Behchokǫ̀ is easily accessible year-round, and being one hour from Yellowknife one can shop, visit the Arctic Spa, dine at local restaurants, and visit the recreation center or swimming pool (opened April 2025). Behchokǫ̀ has two schools, a local multi-use recreational facility, a grocery store, gas station, and two restaurants. The Behchokǫ̀ Health Centre is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with staff on call outside of regular hours.
