About the position

Duties
Assisting with land preparation for research trials.
Assisting with preparation and maintenance of equipment.
Operation of tractors and agricultural equipment such as mowers, seeders, pruning equipment (chainsaws) and sprayers.
Assisting with planting, spraying, irrigation and harvest operations.
Assisting with transportation of equipment between locations.
Assisting with collecting plant and soil samples for analysis.
Assisting with field, roadway, grounds and tree maintenance.
Record keeping.
Intent of the process
The immediate need is to fill one (1) seasonal permanent position and one (1) full-time temporary position (duration of 12 months).
A pool of qualified or partially qualified candidates may be established and used to fill similar positions on a temporary and/or permanent basis (including seasonal positions).
In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, they may be considered for acting, deployment, indeterminate, assignment or secondment opportunities.

Other Conditions of Employment:
Possession of a valid, class 5 British Columbia driver’s license, or other provincial/territorial equivalency.
Ability and willingness to work overtime on occasion, including weekends, possibly on short notice.
Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work, including moderate to heavy manual labour that requires lifting objects (up to 25 kg).
Ability and willingness to work under various environmental and weather conditions.
Ability and willingness to control allergies through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and this must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
Ability and willingness to work on varied terrain and with various commercial agricultural equipment.
Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate.
Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain equipment training.

Education:
A secondary school diploma OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
At a later stage in the selection process, you will be required to provide documentation verifying your educational credentials.

Experience:
Experience operating grounds equipment such as mowers, string trimmers, tractors or other machinery (heavy and light).
Experience performing manual labour.
Applied / assessed at a later date
Knowledge:
Knowledge of agricultural crops or plant propagation.
Knowledge of general practices in agriculture.
Knowledge of the safe operation of agricultural-grade equipment or similar mechanical systems.
Competencies:

Abilities:
Ability to conduct work in accordance with instructions, established procedures and techniques, and safety rules.
Ability to maintain records.

Asset Qualifications - Occupational Certification:
Possession of a valid Pesticide Applicator Certificate.
Asset Qualifications - Experience:
Experience in commercial agriculture.
Experience in tree fruit and vineyard production or in horticulture, plant care, or related fields demonstrating practical knowledge of living plants and crop management.
Experience operating and maintaining farm vehicles, equipment, and implements or construction, material handling and earthmoving equipment such as dozers, excavators, skid steers, backhoes, forklifts, telehandlers, and/or compact loaders.
Organizational Needs:
