About the position

Duties
Provides general maintenance, repair and labour services to support grounds, trails and facilities maintenance; construction and installations; and other general maintenance and repair requirements for the Parks Canada Agency.
This is outdoor, physically demanding work. You will be expected to perform strenuous physical activity effectively and safely, to work and travel in varied terrain and weather conditions and provide and wear sturdy footwear suitable for hiking and working in a mountainous environment. You must be willing and able to spend up to ten days duration in a remote work location, work weekends, holidays and overtime and assist with forest fire suppression, including stand-by and extra-duty if required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: (Must be met prior to employment)
• Possession and maintenance of a valid class 5 driver’s license and be legally able to drive;
• Will be required to undergo and pass pre-employment and periodic medical checks;
• Willing and able to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
• Willing and able to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
• Willing and able to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required;
• Current First Aid certification (St John’s Standard or equivalent). NOTE: A copy of certification will be required at time of interview invitation. Failure to provide a copy of certification will result in your application not being assessed further.

Operational Requirements

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Willing and able to perform strenuous physical activity effectively and safely;
• Willing and able to provide and wear sturdy footwear suitable for hiking and working in a mountainous environment;
• Willing and able to spend up to ten days duration in a remote work location;
• Willing and able to assist with forest fire suppression, including stand-by and extra-duty if required.

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a secondary school diploma or approved alternatives or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
• Current First Aid certification (St John’s Standard or equivalent).
NOTE: A copy of certification will be required at time of interview invitation. Failure to provide a copy of certification will result in your application not being assessed further.
EXPERIENCE IN:
• Experience in the use, operation and maintenance of a range of manual and power tools and equipment;
• Experience in travelling or working in a remote location;
• Experience in multi-day hikes, carrying an overnight pack;
• Experience in travel by various forms including: hiking, horse, bike, boat and/or helicopter.
