About the position

Duties
Engineering Officer, SO-MAO-03, SO-MAO-04, SO MAO 05:
• Supervises the operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems.
• Supervises and assists in the training of engineering personnel assigned to the watch.
• Leads and/or participates in, damage control, firefighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations;
• Maintains and updates machinery maintenance records, as well as engine room log and oil record books.
Senior Engineering Officer, SO-MAO-06:
• Supervises, plans and directs the day-to-day operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems.
• Provides technical support to vessel client personnel to assist in the conduct of program operations.
• Leads and/or participates in, damage control, firefighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations;
• Recommends and assists with refit specifications, vessel's additions and alterations, and other contract repair work required for the upkeep of the vessel;
• Coordinates and supervises the watch keeping system, and stands assigned watches on a relief basis.
• Makes recommendations to the Chief Engineer pertaining to the engine room's material resource needs.
• Provides all support necessary to ensure Canadian Coast Guard meets its mandate.

• Willingness and ability to go to sea for prolonged periods (Up to 42 consecutive days) of time and in adverse weather conditions

• Must be willing and able to perform overtime work as required, often on short notice
• Willingness and ability to wear and maintain a uniform per CCG standards, safety footwear, and maintain job related personal safety equipment 
• Compliance with the CCG Safety Management System and Standards 
• Must be willing and able to work shiftwork
• Willingness and ability to wear a Respiratory Protection device and meet the standard of the CCG Respiratory Protection Program 
*A valid Transport Canada Seafarer's medical may be accepted on initial appointment for a period of up to a maximum of 6 months or until a Health Canada Medical is completed.

Occupational Certification
• Stream 1 (SO MAO 03, 04) and Stream 2 (SO MAO 05): Valid Transport Canada Fourth-class marine engineering certificate or higher*
*If you do not yet hold a Transport Canada Fourth-Class Marine Engineering Certificate or higher, but expect to complete it within the coming year, you are still encouraged to apply. Your application will be considered once your Certificate of Competency has been obtained and a copy is provided to the selection board. The certificate must be submitted within one year of your application date
• Stream 3 (SO MAO 06): Valid Transport Canada Third-class marine engineering certificate or higher
Experience
• Stream 1 (SO MAO 03, 04) and Stream 2 (SO MAO 05): Experience as a Marine Engineering Officer*
*For Stream 2, candidates must demonstrate a greater depth and breadth of experience to meet the experience requirement than is required for stream 1. Candidates who meet the certification requirement but do not meet the experience requirement for this stream, will be placed in a partially-qualified pool until the requirement is met.
• Stream 3 (SO MAO 06): Experience as a Marine Engineering Officer* or Senior Engineer
*For Stream 3, candidates must demonstrate a greater depth and breadth of experience to meet the experience requirement than is required for stream 2.
