About the position

Duties
Fire Crew Members are a fundamental part of our Fire Management Team. These individuals help carry out the Parks Canada's fire management programs through fuel management, prescribed fires and wildfire suppression services.

Intent of the process
This process could be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with different employee status, security level or language requirements, in this same location or elsewhere in the country.

Conditions of employment

• Obtain and maintain a reliability status security clearance.
• Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
• Standard First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) and CPR certificate.
• Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement including:
- Occupational Health Assessment for firefighters.
- Meet and maintain certified status for the Canadian Physical Performance Exchange Standard for Type 1 Wildland Fire Fighters (WFX-FIT) in accordance with Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) Requirements.

Operational Requirements

• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required.
• Willingness to complete various training courses and attain certifications.
• Willingness to work and travel in adverse environmental conditions, varied terrain, isolated locations and by various means of transportation, including fixed and rotary wing.
• Willingness to participate in Incident Command System positions as required and assigned.
• Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required.
• Able and willing to annually certify for helicopter hover exit.
• Able and willing to obtain and maintain chainsaw certification.
• Willingness to obtain a 40-hour Wilderness First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
• Willingness and ability to travel regularly for planned trips lasting 2 to 5 days and to participate in deployments lasting up to 19 days during the fire season.
• Undergo and pass periodic medical checks.

• A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a field related to the duties of the position.
(GT-03 only)
• Basic Wildland Fire Management Course, Parks Canada Agency (PCA) or equivalent Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) certification (S-100/S-131).
• Intermediate Fire Behaviour Course PCA or equivalent Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) certification (S-290).
• Introductory Incident Command System ICS-100

EXPERIENCES (GT-02 and GT-03)
• Experience working in outdoor or remote environments.
• Experience working in a resource, environmental, or fire management field.
• Experience working in a team environment.

(GT-03 only)
• Experience in fire management operations related to fuel management, prescribed fire and fire suppression.
• Experience working on the fireline.
• Experience in using and maintaining fire equipment.
• Experience supervising fire crew member(s), while on the fireline, prescribed fire(s) or fuel management project(s).

EDUCATION AND OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
• Basic Wildland Fire Management Course, Parks Canada Agency (PCA) or equivalent Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) certification (S-100/S-131).
• Intermediate Fire Behaviour Course PCA or equivalent Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) certification (S-290).
• Introductory Incident Command System ICS-100.
• Valid chainsaw certification through an accredited training provider.
• Wildfire Danger Tree Assessor certification – Wildland Fire Safety module.
• Completion of post-secondary program related to environmental or natural sciences (e.g., biology, geology, forestry).
EXPERIENCE
• Previous fireline or firefighting experience, including any volunteer work.
• Recent (within the last 3 years) experience supervising fire crew member(s), while on the fireline, prescribed fire(s) or fuel management project(s).
