About the position

Duties
The specific duties vary between the trades and typical day of tasks will need to be adjusted depending on the demands and needs of our clients and partners. As Victor Eaton, puts it: “A typical day is not so typical. There are many aspects of work and many ways to grow and learn from all of the Trades that are established on the Hay River Coast Guard Base. As a small base, everyone pitches in to be productive and achieve all of the tasks at hand. The Hay River Base has a fully functional Carpenter’s Shop, Mechanic’s Bay and Welding Shop.”
Duties may include working on small engines, pumps and skimmers of varying in size and manufacturer, at either the Hay River Coast Guard base or at one of the environmental response depots located around the region. Frequent travel in a helicopter, all-terrain vehicles as well as in small and large vessels to perform installations, commissioning and maintenance of the navigational aids along the shores of the Mackenzie River, Great Slave Lake and Arctic waters including Hudson Bay.
Work environment
The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is a special operating agency within the Department of National Defence (DND). We work to ensure the safety of mariners in Canadian waters and protect Canada’s marine environment. We support Canada’s economic growth through the safe and efficient movement of maritime trade. We help to ensure our country’s sovereignty and security through our presence in Canadian waters. The CCG proudly serves 243,000 kilometers of Canada’s vast and rugged coastline, the longest coastline of any given country, and is one of the few federal agencies that provides direct, front-line services 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
As many CCG Hay River employees will point out, the best thing about living and working in Hay River is the natural beauty. Nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers will love it here. Fishing, hunting, and camping are among the many outdoor activities that locals enjoy. As our Area Supervisor Victor states, “If you enjoy the outdoors, this is the place to be. There really are no downsides to living in the north as long as you enjoy winter and all the outdoor adventures that go along with it.” When asked what inspired him to move to Hay River in the first place, Victor responds, “Hay River is a growing community, and I wanted to be part of that development. There are plenty of opportunities in this small town, and if you are looking to grow with the community, the sky is the limit.”
