About the position

Duties
• Conduct research in the context of dietary intake modeling and usual intake estimation.
• Apply and extend classical statistical methods (regression, GLMs, mixed effects/hierarchical models).
• Develop Bayesian models and implement them in python.
• Conduct simulation studies to compare the performance of different methods under realistic scenarios.
• Create, improve, and document reliable and reproducible software in Python, packaged with testing, automation, and containerization for long-term use.
• Ensure the methods and software are accessible to the scientific community through open-source release, technical documentation, and scholarly communication.
• Prepare and deliver scientific presentations and reports both inside and outside of Health Canada.

Intent of the process
The Immediate need is to staff one position in the NCR where the RAP student will be required to physically go into the work building.
Applicants outside the NCR are welcome, so long as they can attend occasional in-person meetings/presentations in the NCR.
Candidate must be able to work at least 20 hours per week for a minimum of three months, ideally starting on January 5, 2026.

Education*:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled in a master’s or PhD program in a recognized post-secondary academic institution with a specialization in: Statistics or other specialization related to the duties.

Your program must require research as part of their curriculum.
The student must have verified with their academic supervisor or department head (as appropriate) that they will be authorized to conduct research work for Health Canada.
* In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.

Experience:
Experience with classical statistical methods, such as regression analysis, generalized linear models, and mixed effects/hierarchical models.
Experience with Bayesian statistics and modeling (e.g., prior specification, posterior inference, MCMC).
Experience with simulation methods and uncertainty quantification (e.g., Monte Carlo, bootstrap, posterior sampling).
Experience with statistical software and programming, with strong proficiency in Python. Familiarity with SAS and/or R is as an asset.
Experience in reproducible research workflows, including packaging code, automation (Snakemake/Prefect/CLI tools), containerization (Docker), and use of GitHub for collaboration.
