About the position

Duties
You will participate in all types of Resource Conservation activities. This position will require a combination of field work in front-country and back-country areas around the field unit, as well as associated office work.
STREAM 1: Monitoring
• Support the ecological monitoring of Fundy National Park’s three ecosystems: Forest, Freshwater, and Wetlands. Areas of monitoring include, but aren’t limited to forest birds, tree health assessments, and terrestrial invasive species;
• Support the implementation of Fundy National Park’s Atlantic Salmon Recovery Program through the monitoring of juvenile and adult salmon populations;
• Additional support for other conservation initiatives;
• Collect data, manage databases, and conduct basic data analysis;
• Collaborate with park staff to develop and/or conduct research projects, which may include summarizing previous research and presentations; and
• Respond to basic human-wildlife coexistence situations.
STREAM 2: Visitor Safety
• Provide basic visitor safety including first aid and rescue services in a wildland setting;
• Respond to basic human-wildlife coexistence situations;
• Regular communication with visitors and the public;
• Input data into the Incident and Event Management (IEM) System and conduct basic data analysis; and
• Additional support for other conservation and monitoring initiatives.

• Must be willing to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required.
• Must be willing to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed personal protective equipment
• May be required to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation.
• Required to possess a valid Class 5 driver's license.
• Will be required to have your own transportation to and from the workplace.
• May be required to find your own housing in the area. Staff housing is limited and not guaranteed.
• Must be willing to obtain other certifications as required and identified by the field unit.
• You must be available to work from May/June to end of August.

EDUCATION:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution and have completed at least one year of studies working towards a degree/diploma with specialization in environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, geology) or other program related to the position.
Stream 2: Visitor Safety
EDUCATION:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution and have completed at least one year of studies working towards a degree/diploma.

Stream 1: Monitoring
EXPERIENCE
• Experience organizing and entering collected data in a digital format.
• Experience conducting field work or research with an environmental and/or natural sciences focus.
• Ability to carry heavy gear for long distances.
Stream 2: Visitor Safety
EXPERIENCE
• Experience organizing and entering collected data in a digital format.
• Experience or training in first aid or emergency management situations.
• Ability to carry heavy gear for long distances.
• Valid certification in Emergency First Aid and CPR for the duration of the work term.
Applied / assessed at a later date
KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of Parks Canada mandate & how it relates to ecosystem integrity/monitoring.
• Knowledge of terrestrial/marine environment, vegetation and wildlife characteristics, as well as weather conditions specific to the Fundy National Park area.

• Experience in the identification of native and non-native plants (Stream 1)
• Experience with field data collection in the physical or natural sciences (Stream 1)
• Knowledge of basic visitor safety services, experience in or ability to assist in basic first aid and rescue services is desired (Stream 2)
CONSIDERED AN ASSET BUT NOT REQUIRED
• ATV certification and experience (Both Streams)
• Electrofishing experience (Stream 1)
• Familiarity with the Incident Command System (ICS) (Stream 2)
