The resource conservation manager is one of two managers reporting to the site superintendent. The position is responsible for the delivery of programs aligned with the Agency’s mandate for protection, quality visitor experiences and public education.
The resource conservation manager will be responsible for the following program elements:
- With full participation of cooperative management partners, lead and evaluate the development, delivery, and integration of the national park ecosystem-based management program (including Ecological Integrity monitoring, applied science and active management activities) to maintain and improve ecological integrity.
- Co-develop research strategies with partners.
- Establish and chair a Traditional Users Advisory Committee which will advise PCA on traditional land use and activities including timber harvesting, trapping, snaring, hunting of small game, fishing, carrying a firearm for personal safety, snowmobiling in the national park reserve and others.
- Delivery of environmental impact assessment and research permitting requirements.
- Managing the development and delivery of a cross-functional visitor-risk management approach, and an incident-management and response approach, for wildfire operations and visitor safety.
The resource conservation manager is expected to carry out the following activities in line with the Agency’s policies and guidelines:
- Working with Indigenous partners, stakeholders and individuals.
- Financial management for procurement, contracting, planning and reporting.
- Hiring, performance management and training/development of team members.
- Demonstrating leadership in a variety of team settings.
- Partnering and engagement to support organizational outcomes; and,
- Exercising good judgement and critical thinking.
Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national park reserves, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.
The Akami-Uapishku – KakKasuak – Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve (AUKMMNPR) became Canada’s 46th national park on July 31, 2015. AUKMMNPR is a shared home to the Innu and Inuit of Labrador. Its coastal, barren, and boreal landscapes have sustained and rejuvenated communities for generations. This National Park Reserve is administered in cooperative management with the Innu, Inuit of Labrador, and Parks Canada. It is also a place where nearby Labradorians continue to practice traditional activities on the land.
Creating a new National Park Reserve is a bold and exciting undertaking (currently there are only 48 across Canada), and AUKKMNPR it is still in the early days with respect to the development and operations. Parks Canada is seeking a Resource Conservation Manager to lead the planning, development and implementation of a Resource Conversation program. Parks Canada is looking for someone who is a creative thinker, is comfortable working in a complex environment, enjoys collaborating with Indigenous partners and others. There will be no typical day: at times you will be preparing for or following up on recommendations from advisory board meetings. At other times you will leading the development of an Ecological Integrity Program and the integrating guardians into this work, or coordinating immediate public safety events such as a searching for a lost hiker or responding to wildfires within the national park reserve.
The results of this process will be used to fill one indeterminate position.

An acceptable combination of education, training, and experience such as traditional knowledge acquired from time spent on the land, immersion in Labrador Indigenous cultures, and/or the teachings of elders; and/or graduation with a degree from a recognized university in natural resources conservation, ecosystem management or natural or environmental sciences (biology, ecology, forestry, soil science, geology and geography).

- Recent* experience managing a program that is related to conservation (e.g. ecological monitoring or restoration, species at risk, fire management, visitor safety, environmental assessment).
- Experience working with Indigenous partners in a cooperative management context, including developing and maintaining relationships.
- Experience providing strategic advice to senior managers and/or partner organizations.
- Experience being a manager (e.g., developing staff, managing budgets, and strategic work planning).
