Duties

DUTIES

Nurse Practitioners play a critical role in CSC’s Health Services team. Nurse Practitioners collaborate with other interdisciplinary team members to deliver Client-centred holistic care. Their typical responsibilities include:

• performing comprehensive health assessments to diagnose and treat health conditions.
• ordering and interpreting screening and diagnostic tests
• performing medical procedures
• prescribing medication
• referring patients to alternative services within the interdisciplinary team
• treatment and management of acute and chronic illness within a holistic model of care
• providing support and education to patients on their diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis, and self-management of health conditions
• serving as a mentor and coach to nursing colleagues
• providing on-call duties where required.

Work environment

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is the federal government agency responsible for administering court imposed sentences of a term of two years or more. CSC manages various security level institutions and supervises offenders under conditional release in the community. CSC’s mandate is to contribute to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure, and humane control.

EDUCATION

Master’s degree in nursing from a recognized university with acceptable specialization as a Nurse Practitioner.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION

Possess a Registered Nurse Practitioner license in good standing from the provincial regulatory body in a Canadian province or territory. (In order to be appointed, candidates must be registered in the province or territory where the position is being staffed.)

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of five years’ experience as a Registered Nurse.
Experience in working in a collaborative practice within a multi-disciplinary team.

EXPERIENCE

Significant* and recent** experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a clinical setting.

Significant* is defined as at least two (2) years’ experience with performing complex activities related to this task in a wide variety of situations.

Recent** is defined as within the last five (5) years.

Experience in program management such as needs assessment, planning organizing, coordinating, and evaluation.
Experience in planning and implementing health related programs.
Experience in planning, developing, and coordinating comprehensive discharge plans for individuals with complex medical problems.
Experience working with Indigenous communities.
Experience working in Emergency or Intensive care units.
Experience working in a community-based setting such as Public Health or Community Mental Health.
Experience working in maternal or women’s health.
Experience working in a correctional environment.
Experience in adult education and health promotion.
Experience with assessing and managing Mental Health conditions.
Experience related to safe, effective, and ethical prescribing and managing clients who are treated with controlled substances.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Willingness to work outside normal or business hours with little or no notice.
Ability and willingness to travel within and outside the Atlantic Region.
May be required to carry equipment or supplies weighing up to 20 kilograms when travelling outside of the office location in order to deliver services.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Ongoing registration with a provincial Nursing regulatory agency in the Canadian province or territory of practice with no conditions or restrictions.
Medical Clearance through Health Canada or alternatives designated by Health Canada.
Valid CPR/AED level Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Valid CPR/AED for Health Care Providers (HCP) is also acceptable.
Some positions may require working shifts, variable hours, weekends, and statutory holidays.
