Duties

PRIMARY RESPONSABILITIES

SUPPORT FOOD PRODUCTION AND SERVICE
Individually or as part of a team, contribute to the preparation of simple or complex established menus, in accordance with task lists, assigned deadlines, and expected versus actual operational levels. Adhere to established menu standards, choices, and portion sizes, while complying with workplace safety regulations and using various food preparation and presentation methods in line with the Department of National Defence standards. Ensure proper handling, identification, and storage of food to maintain cost-effectiveness in food services and optimize the use of leftovers for future meals.

PROVIDE QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE
Provide Quality Customer Service Deliver prompt, high-quality service while maintaining a professional, friendly, and courteous attitude toward all customers. This must be done in accordance with assigned tasks, deadlines, and operational expectations.

CLEAN AND MAINTAIN FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT
Keep the work area clean and perform required cleaning, disinfecting, and maintenance of used equipment within the designated timeframes. This includes any other maintenance duties related to the role.

APPLY APPROPRIATE WORK METHODS (HEALTH AND SAFETY)
Consistently follow hygienic and aseptic work practices as prescribed by the food safety code of conduct. Perform physically demanding tasks safely by using the appropriate tools and methods, wearing mandatory personal protective equipment, and adhering to health and safety regulations in the workplace.

EDUCATION:
• Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) in institutional cooking OR Red Seal certification as a cook OR Level 5 (NQ5) military cook's certificate issued by the CAF

• or At the manager’s discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may serve as an alternative to the minimum education stated above. Whenever the minimum education is met using this alternative, it is met for the specific position only and must be re-assessed for other positions for which this alternative has been specified by the manager.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience working as a cook or chef in an institutional, industrial or commercial food service environment (restaurants, hotels, catering services, hospitals, retirement homes, educational establishments, correctional facilities or camps).
• Experience in applying health, security, hygiene and sanitation rules in a work environment.

COMPETENCIES:
• Thinking things through.
• Demonstrating integrity and respect.
• Working effectively with others.
• Showing initiative and being action-oriented.
• Communication.

CAPACITY:
• Capacity to solve simple math equations.
• Capacity to work under pressure.

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATES:
• Training related to health and hygiene.
• WHIMIS training.
• First aid qualification.

ASSET EXPERIENCE:
• Experience supervising civilian or military cooks.
• Experience in applying the Food Security and Defense Program.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Available to work irregular hours (on call), shift work, weekends and consent to work additional (overtime) hours on occasion.
• Compliance of the Food Safety Code of Practice.
• Respect the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance with safety regulations.
• Strict adherence to the Department of National Defence and Canadian Forces Code of Values and Ethics, Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector, Directive on Conflict of Interest, and Defence Administrative Orders and Directives (DAOD) 7021-1, Conflict of Interest.
• Capacity to lift and manipulate material weighing up to 20kg in all respect of food practices.
