Duties

- Manages field and greenhouse staff whose activities include seed preparation, planting, spraying, mowing, for research field maintenance and scientific purposes.
- Directs activities related to the operation of hand and power tools, and the maintenance of greenhouse and field equipment such as sprayers, plows, cultivators, etc.
- Manages and keeps records of activities, supplies, health and safety, and other regulatory required documentation.
- Conducts performance reviews with staff, encourages open communication, and nurtures a strong working environment.
- Coordinates farm budget forecasts, expenditures, and reviews work done by contractors.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff one position on an indeterminate basis. A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures as well as various linguistic requirements.

Education:
Graduation from a two-year program of study from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in agriculture, forestry, horticulture or related fields. A minimum of five years in a supervisory role at a commercial or research farm is an acceptable alternative to meeting the education criteria.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience working in the supervision of farm staff, including managing work schedules and setting priorities.
Experience in performance management, an ongoing process that involves planning, developing, coaching, providing feedback and evaluating employee performance.
Experience with managing budgets
Experience with operation, maintenance, and managing equipment needs.

Asset Qualifications:
Valid pesticide applicator license
Experience in agricultural research methods and principles.
Experience in maintaining records of land use, research plots and greenhouse compartments.
Experience in keeping equipment management records for farm and greenhouse operations.

Ability and willingness to work overtime, including evenings and weekends.
