Duties

The Geoscience Technician is responsible for supporting applied geoscience projects throughout Nunavut. They participate in geological mapping, use, maintain, set-up, and takedown equipment, handle rock samples and earth materials in support of these projects.

Work environment

Iqaluit is the capital or the territory of Nunavut and is the largest and fastest growing community in the territory with a population of just over 7000. It is a dynamic city that is the political, business, and transportation hub of Nunavut. It is rich in traditional Inuit culture and surrounded by a spectacular Arctic landscape, that is great for hiking and boating in the summer and dogsledding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling or watching the northern lights in winter.

The Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office (CNGO) is located in downtown Iqaluit. Experience short commute times to get to the office. Workout or swim at lunch at the Iqaluit pool and fitness centre.

The Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office (CNGO) consists of expertise in geology, GIS and cartography. The mandate of the office is to provide Nunavut with accessible geoscience information and expertise to support resource exploration and development, infrastructure development, and geoscience education, training and awareness.The office is focused on creating a workplace that supports an accessible, equitable, inclusive, and diverse workforce to address current and future geoscience challenges. It also provides a stimulating work environment with a passionate team and promotes work-life balance.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one (1) indeterminate EG-03 position in Nunavut.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION
A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives (see Note)

Note: The employer-approved alternatives to a secondary school diploma are:
o A satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or
o An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Candidates who already meet both of the following criteria must be accepted as meeting the secondary school diploma requirement:
a. Candidates who have achieved a satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; and
b. Candidates who have been appointed or deployed for an indeterminate period to a position in the EG classification.

The opportunity to be assessed by at least one of the two employer-approved alternatives must be offered to candidates who have not previously met the secondary school diploma requirement.

Candidates who were appointed or deployed on an indeterminate basis using an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience meet the secondary school requirement for the EG classification only and must be reassessed for entry to other classifications on the basis of this alternative.

Degree equivalency

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
