Working within the Environmental Science Division of CanmetMINING, this project would be investigating the potential environmental impact of elements associated with critical mineral/REE mining projects (e.g. Nb, Ta, REEs etc.). For this particular position, the candidate would be investigating the solubility, transformation and toxicity of sparingly soluble elements in aquatic ecosystems.
CanmetMINING is part of Natural Resources Canada’s Lands and Minerals Sector conducting leading-edge research in mining. Research programs include critical minerals (including battery minerals), efficient mining technologies and programs to lessen environmental impacts and adapt to a changing climate. CanmetMINING works in partnership with industry, academic researchers and other government laboratories.
The intention is to staff one (1) student position for the completion of a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Wilfred Laurier University

Education
• Completion of a BSc and MSc degree with specialization in chemistry, ecology, biology, toxicology or environmental sciences.
• Currently enrolled, or willing to enroll, as a Ph.D student in Biological and Chemical sciences at Wilfred Laurier University: https://wlu.ca/programs/science/graduate/biological-and-chemical-sciences-phd/index.html
Experience
• Experience conducting aquatic toxicity testing procedures with fish, invertebrates or algae/plants and using statistical tools to assess effect concentrations.
• Experience working with chemicals, especially in the preparation of solutions for toxicity testing
• Experience in maintaining aquatic organism cultures, including water quality measurements

Ability
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing
• Ability to gather information from the scientific literature
