Duties

Plans, organizes and conducts routine and non-routine analysis.
Reviews and interprets scientific study results.
Analyzes and interprets various forms of data from laboratory research experiments and creates reports.
Develops and validates analytical methods for routine and non-routine analyses. Evaluates new analysis procedures and techniques.
Operates and maintains scientific instruments.
Adheres to and participates in the development and application of laboratory quality control procedures.
Maintains knowledge of emerging scientific trends and developments of evolving technologies to adapt/refine and use in departmental scientific analyses and assessments.
Participates in team meetings.
Participates in scientific conferences and workshops.

Intent of the process

The intent is to staff two (2) indeterminate English positions and one (1) term English position in Ottawa.

A pool of fully and/or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions, within Health Canada with various tenures (Term, indeterminate, secondment, assignment, deployment, acting)

EDUCATION
-Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
E1: Experience in planning, and conducting routine and/or non-routine analysis to support scientific research.

E2: Experience in the operation AND maintenance of modern analytical instruments, including liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) or gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

E3: Experience in collecting, evaluating and summarizing emerging trends and developments of evolving analytical technologies to adapt/refine and use in scientific analyses.

E4: Experience in generating, evaluating and interpreting scientific data generated by LC-MS or GC-MS analyses.

- K1: Knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of gas chromatography, liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy.
- K2: Knowledge of the requirements for development and validation of scientific methods.
- K3: Knowledge of methods, techniques and practices pertaining to the collection, handling, storage, preparation, extraction and chemical analysis of environmental or biological samples.
- K4: Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) principles and procedures, and good laboratory practices.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
Masters of Sciences or a Doctorate degree in chemistry, or biochemistry.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
AE1. Experience in operating and maintaining an Orbitrap mass spectrometer.
AE2. Experience in preprocessing, alignment, and deconvolution of mass spectrometry data.
AE3. Experience in the operation AND maintenance of modern analytical instruments, including liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) AND gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
AE4: Experience in generating, evaluating and interpreting scientific data generated by LC-MS AND GC-MS analyses.
