The key objectives of this project are:
1. To collate field observational data on aquatic invertebrate viral vector species in the Maritime Provinces
2. To carry out field observations on aquatic invertebrate viral vector species in the Wolastoq|Saint John River watershed, including deployment of field sensors, benthic invertebrate sampling and associated laboratory analysis.
This position will support work under a new Shared Interdepartmental Project (with scientists from AAFC, PHAC and CFIA.
The work will be completed in collaboration with the Biology Department at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton, NB). ECCC’s Water Science & Technology Directorate have a unit located on the UNB campus, and the student will be based there for the duration of the employment period.
The successful candidate will work in the field and the laboratory, on a project studying ecosystem services in river floodplain wetlands, with a focus on the occurrence of invertebrate viral disease vectors (e.g blood-feeding leeches, mosquitoes).
The student will work out of the ECCC unit in the Biology Department at the University of New Brunswick, and will need to fulfill any requirements to complete a Master of Science, including taking courses, writing and defending their thesis.

Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in biology, or in an equivalent subject area directly related to the duties of the position, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
Experience:
Experience working in a research team.
Experience in wetland ecological fieldwork.
