Assessment accommodation

👉 Isolated Post Allowance: approximately $6,172/year to $10,272/year prorated to length of contract

Duties

As part of our dynamic and skilled carpentry team in Whitehorse, you will be working on the SS Klondike and Chilkoot National Historic Sites.

You will be performing skilled carpentry work on historic and contemporary assets. This work would include foundation upgrades, roof upgrades , inspecting facilities for defects and working with a multi-disciplinary team to repair and maintain our heritage and modern structures. As a carpenter, you will have the opportunity to lead different projects in collaboration with the Carpentry Supervisor.

In this position you may be required to work outside in sometimes challenging weather conditions in remote backcountry environments.

Intent of the process

We are looking to hire a Carpenter for a 12-month term from April 2024 To March 2025.

This process may be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures, security levels or linguistic profiles in same or other parts of the country.

EDUCATION:
Successful completion of a post-secondary program relevant to the position OR an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATE :
• Journeyman Carpenter Certificate

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
• Experience in the safe and appropriate use and maintenance of power, hand tools and construction equipment used in the building trades
• Experience in the inspection, repairing and maintenance of heritage and modern structures
• Recent*experience working as a carpenter

Recent is defined as * Minimum 3 years experience working as journeyman carpenter within the last 5 years

KNOWLEDGE
• Knowledge of building maintenance and construction techniques in historic and contemporary assets
• Knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used in the building trades
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, as they relate to the employee and employer, and able to demonstrate a culture of safety in the work environment

ABILITIES
• Ability to use, inspect, and maintain a wide range of shop tools associated with carpentry
• Ability to review and interpret conceptual building/construction plans
• Ability to work independently, plan, assess and adjust varied priorities
• Ability to work as a team and provide leadership on the jobsite
• Ability to estimate materials, costs and tools required to plan and execute a project

• Wear a Parks Canada uniform

Conditions of employment

• Reliability Status security clearance
• Possess and maintain a valid class 5 Drivers’ Licence
• Successfully complete safety courses and training, as required (e.g.: Standard First Aid, Fall Arrest, WHMIS, CLC training, etc.)
• Undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks (when position is located in an area classed as isolated and remote, a pre-employment medical examination of an individual and his/her dependants may be required)
