Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national park reserves, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.
The Akami-Uapishku – KakKasuak – Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve (AUKMMNPR) became Canada’s 46th national park on July 31, 2015. AUKMMNPR is a shared home to the Innu and Inuit of Labrador. Its coastal, barren, and boreal landscapes have sustained and rejuvenated communities for generations. This National Park Reserve is administered in cooperative management with the Innu, Inuit of Labrador, and Parks Canada. It is also a place where nearby Labradorians continue to practice traditional activities on the land.
Creating a new National Park Reserve is a bold and exciting undertaking (currently there are only 48 National Parks and National Park Reserves across Canada), and AUKKMNPR it is still in the early days with respect to the development and operations. Parks Canada is looking for someone who is a creative thinker, is comfortable working in a complex environment, enjoys collaborating with Indigenous partners and others.
