What you will gain

Do you want to work outside, on the water, or in a lab? Do you want to use your aquatic biology skills to make a difference? Come work for Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO)! You will gain valuable experience towards your career while providing a much-needed service to Canadians.

This experience with DFO will provide you with:

• exposure to how aquatic biology and science is conducted in the Federal Government

• diversified on-the-job training including safety training, boating, ATV’ing, trailering, first aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

• a network of peers and mentors within the Aquatic Biology community and the public service

CLOSING DATE:  January 12, 2024

Typical tasks may include:

• collecting biological samples/information from candidate lakes and rivers

• sampling water, sediment, benthic invertebrates, zooplankton, freshwater mussels, and fishes

• assessing the chemical, physical and biological nature of Great Lakes tributaries for Sea Lamprey management

• collecting habitat and species information to assess the status of Federal Species at Risk and of Aquatic Invasive Species under the Species at Risk Act (SARA).

Note 1:  While working in the field, you may encounter adverse conditions, and you may need to travel for extended periods of time to complete a research project. You may also end up working shift work or extended hours, both of which receive compensation.

Duration:  Full-time from May 6 to August 30, 2024

Note 2: There is limited flexibility of contract dates, especially start dates, due to extensive mandatory training scheduled at the beginning of all new student contracts and due to the schedule of field research activities through the summer field season.

What we are looking for

Post-secondary students currently registered in a program of study at an accredited College or University who have taken or will be taking aquatic biology courses.

You must meet the FSWEP eligibility criteria.

Language:  English

Note 3: This program is administered from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. However, more than half the positions are in Burlington, Ontario. If you are chosen for an interview, you will be given the opportunity to choose between being based out of Sault Ste. Marie or Burlington.

Conditions of employment

Conditions of employment are any requirements that must be met or complied with before being hired to a particular position and are to be maintained throughout the duration of employment.

• pass a Health Canada approved physical exam prior to selection (which will be coordinated by DFO)

• meet the necessary security standard (National Security Investigation) to obtain and maintain a valid Enhanced Security clearance prior to selection (coordinated by DFO)

• be willing and able to travel to, and work in, the United States; therefore, some positions may require a U.S. work visa

You are expected to cover your own relocation and living costs when working in the office or laboratory.

TRAVEL: Most of the student positions require large amounts of field work which involves travel and living in hotels/motels/other lodgings arranged and paid for by DFO.  Meal expenses are also paid by DFO.
