About the position
The transition to low-carbon energy systems requires an integrated understanding of hydrogen value chains, from production to end-use. This project aims to develop advanced analytical tools to assess the techno-economic and environmental performance of various hydrogen production and utilization pathways.The candidate will be responsible for analyzing and modelling complete hydrogen value chains, adopting a feedstock-agnostic approach (e.g., water, biomass, and other sources). The work will cover a wide range of existing, emerging, and under-development hydrogen production technologies.Key responsibilities include:
• Conducting a comprehensive review of hydrogen production technologies (e.g., electrolysis, reforming, thermochemical and biological pathways);
• Modelling, simulating, and optimizing hydrogen production processes using specialized tools (e.g., Aspen, I-BIOREF, or equivalent);
• Evaluating hydrogen transport, storage, and delivery options;
• Assessing hydrogen utilization pathways in two key industrial sectors:
1. Aviation industry, particularly for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production;
2. Iron and steel industry, particularly for iron ore reduction.
• Investigating hydrogen quality requirements for each end-use application;
• Performing techno-economic assessments and life cycle assessments (LCA), including integration of carbon pricing mechanisms;
• Conducting sensitivity analyses to evaluate the impact of key parameters on system performance and viability.The candidate will work closely with the CanmetENERGY’s Bio-Hydrogen team of Varennes in Quebec. The candidate will be required to attend team meetings, will produce reports presentations and potentially a scientific publication as part of this work. The work will be in hybrid mode i.e., partly on-site at the Varennes (QC) Research Centre and partly teleworking.
This opportunity is for a duration of eight months geared towards a student who is completing their Ph.D. This duration may be extended for an additional eight months, if required.
